A Case Study Profiling Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s Partnership with Clinical Colleagues

When I joined Hutchinson Regional Medical Center three years ago, one of my first priorities was to spend some time getting to know our surgeons and giving them an opportunity to share some insights and suggestions with me. My goal was simply to figure out how we could make our hospital a better place, not only for our patients but also for our physicians and staff. I spent my first few months on the job doing exactly this, and it’s safe to say I heard quite a bit about areas where we can improve. Interestingly, one key area of our hospital that I didn’t hear much about at all was our anesthesia service line. When I asked our surgeons questions about anesthesia, the consistent response was “Keep our current providers in place. This group is competent, skilled, flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.” And so, our partnership with Clinical Colleagues continued.
Now that I have been leading this hospital for three years, I understand why the consensus was that we should continue working with Clinical Colleagues. Everything the doctors told me initially is true, but beyond that, I also appreciate how the Clinical Colleagues team collaborates with us from an overall operational and cost efficiency standpoint. When we approached them to see if there was any opportunity for us to reduce our expenses, they were happy to evaluate our model, identify alternative solutions and came back to me with some new options for consideration that would cost less but not impact our operational efficiency. We recently hired a private consultant who specializes in the nuances of anesthesia to evaluate our department and determine how our organization is performing from an operational and financial standpoint, in comparison to other local hospitals. This process allowed us to confirm what we thought was the case all along: Clinical Colleagues is the right business partner for our anesthesia service line.
