Española lies along the Rio Grande River within the historic counties of Rio Arriba and Santa Fe. It encompasses the centuries-old Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblos whose people have nurtured the land long before the coming of European settlers. The year of 1998 marked the 400th year of Colonial Hispanic influence in Northern New Mexico and in Española Valley. For historians interested in New Mexican history, the Puye Cliff Dwellings and carvings, created whilst the Pueblo Indians inhabited this region between the years of 900 and 1580, are all what remains of pre-Colonial natives.
No town in New Mexico could possibly exist without a picturesque backdrop, and Espanola certainly is no exception to this rule. With mountains surrounding the entire valley, there is no need to travel far to see the beauty of New Mexico.
